COEYMANS, N.Y. - The Chief of Police in Coeymans says he is once again bracing his department for the possibility of dissolution, after the town supervisor is suggesting that the Albany County Sheriff's Department takes over their services.
Coeymans Police Chief Greg Darlington tells NEWS10 he has heard this suggestion several times during his 25 years with the Coeymans Police Department.
Darlington says he is concerned that this time he, his officers and dispatchers - about 25 to 30 full and part-time employees - could lose their jobs.
In an email to NEWS10 Coeymans Town Supervisor Stephen Flach says the town could save a substantial amount of money by dissolving the department and then contract out law enforcement services to Albany County.
Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple tells NEWS10 if the idea pans out he would like to hire the Coeymans officers. However, the part-time employees may not have the same opportunity due to union constraints.
Apple says he will present some ideas at a meeting open to the public scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at the Coeymans Town Hall.
