SCHOHARIE -- Schoharie is marking its 300th anniversary with a three day long celebration this weekend. More than a hundred people turned out in the center of Schoharie for the opening ceremony Friday. The event highlights Schoharie Valley's rich history as the community still struggles to rebuild following Irene.
Its been little more than a year since Tropical Storm barreled through this area, destroying homes, businesses, schools and much more. The bottom floor of the court on Main Street remains closed but others have reopened, including the Schoharie Free Library.
"The whole entire cellar and 27 inches of the first floor were covered in water and sludge and all that disgusting stuff. We lost over 5000 bar-coded items; books, CD's, DVD's. You name it we lost it," Cathy Caizzo, the Director of the Schoharie Free Library said.
Caizzo said federal and state aid have not yet come through, but that the community has stepped up.
"People have given us money, they've given us books, they've given us their time, which is really the most important thing," Caizzo said.
Organizers said they were using the event to highlight how far the community has come but also show people what still needs to be done.
