ALBANY, N.Y. - The Twin Bridges construction project is scheduled to begin Friday night, rerouting traffic from the northbound lanes to the southbound lanes of the bridges.
The northbound lanes will be closed all weekend, from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday, so crews can replace the decks. This scheduled will occur every weekend for the next six weeks. All lanes will be open for Columbus Day weekend.
Northbound drivers will be directed to the southbound side of the bridge, which will have one lane open in each direction.
The construction will also likely cause heavier traffic on Route 9, an alternate route for the Northway.
The work on the northbound side is expected to be complete by the end of October, and work on the southbound lanes will begin in the spring.
The Thaddeus Kosciuszko Bridge, or Twin Bridges, carries 100,000 cars over the Mohawk River between Albany and Saratoga counties daily.
