Mom of murdered girl raises funds to attend killer's execution

LAKE LUZERNE, N.Y. - It has been 22 years since a Lake Luzerne woman's 9-year-old daughter was abducted, then raped and killed in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Now her convicted killer will is scheduled to be executed next month.

Tuesday, the family tells NEWS10 enough money has been donated so they will be able to witness the execution. "We're getting our front row seat," says Tina Curl.

Curl began fundraising for her trip to South Dakota two-and-a-half weeks ago. As of Tuesday, $4,000 has been donated that Curl and her husband Dave will use to make the 1,400 mile trip to see David Moeller executed.

"Nothing's ever going to bring me closure because nothing is ever going to bring Becky back, but it will bring me relief," she says.

Moeller is convicted of abducting and killing nine year old Becky O'Connell in 1990, while she was on the way to a convenience store a block from her home to buy candy.

Becky would have been 32-years-old today, but all the Curls have left are countless pictures in their home.

"I live in the past," says Curl. "It's where Becky was."

Tina Curl says there's not an hour of the day that goes by that she doesn't think of her little girl, Becky, and her brutal death. Curl says while some people may not understand her decision to go to South Dakota to witness the execution, as a mother, it's something she has to do.

"I want to see him die," she says. "I don't care if people think it's right or it's wrong. Until you've walked in my shoes, don't judge me. I did send Moeller a letter, just letting him know he won't see me, because it's a one way glass. But I will be on the other side of that glass. And I will watch him take his last breath, just like he watched my daughter."

Curl says the trip would not be possible without the donations, because her husband is unemployed and she is on disability, stemming from a heart attack in 2003.

The Curls plan to leave for South Dakota on October 25. The execution is scheduled for the week of Oct. 28-Nov 3.
