LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. - A 28-year-old Long Island man visiting Lake George over the Labor Day weekend drowned at Sheppard's Park on Sunday.

The victim Raja Podapoti, of Hicksville, was recovered from Lake George by lifeguards after his friends reported him missing while preparing to leave the beach at Sheppard's Park. Podapoti was with a group of approximately ten friends visiting Lake George over the weekend.

While preparing to leave the beach for the day, Podapoti's friends advised lifeguards that he was unaccounted for and that he had not been observed exiting the water.

The lifeguards directed all swimmers to exit the lake and began a search of the water in accordance with policy and procedure. Podapoti was located submerged under several feet of water a short time later and was removed to the beach where resuscitation efforts began.

Lifeguards and paramedics from the Lake George Emergency Squad were able to restore the victim's heartbeat, and he was subsequently transported to the Glens Falls Hospital where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Podapoti died as a result around 11:00 p.m. on Sunday.

The cause of death has been determined to be as a result of accidental drowning.
