NY DA seeks special investigator in Lopez sex case

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A New York City prosecutor wants a special district attorney to investigate claims of sexual harassment against an assemblyman that have roiled New York politics.

Charles Hynes, the district attorney in Kings County, was supported in his 2009 campaign by the county Democratic Committee, which for years has been run by Assemblyman Vito Lopez. Hynes says the committee also supports his 2013 re-election bid and that prevents him from investigating Lopez to avoid any appearance of conflict of interest

The Assembly Ethics Committee on Aug. 24 censured Lopez on charges he sexually harassed women staffers. The women were quietly paid $135,000 - including $103,000 from a taxpayer-paid Assembly fund - to settle the claims.

Lopez has said he won't seek another term as chairman of the powerful Democratic Committee.
