A photo from the Town of Prattsville during Tropical Storm Irene (August 28, 2011)
PRATTSVILLE, N.Y.--While the signs of destruction from Irene are still evident, so are signs of re-building.
The landscape of Prattsville is very different from what it was last year at this time, empty lots now sit where homes used to be, foundations uprooted by the storm.
Debbie McCullar works at the Great American grocery store in town and remembers the first days in Prattsville after the storm as a war zone.
McMullar shows NEWS10 a marker of how high the water levels got inside the store, that water level even higher in other homes and businesses in town. But one year later, Prattsville still exists and the residents are not going anywhere.
Tuesday night, on the one year anniversary of the storm, dozens of people gathered at a BBQ on Main Street, with smiles on their faces.
As the community remains in tact, a simple sign with the word "hope" remains staked in the ground, a reminder to many what got them through the past year.
