Toddler's condition improving after falling from window

Posted: Updated:

TROY, NY - Troy police inform NEWS10 the the 2-year-old boy who fell from a second story window Monday night is improving at Albany Medical Center on Tuesday.

The Troy toddler is said to still be in critical condition at Albany Medical Center Tuesday, although the doctor's prognosis on the boy has improved. Captain John Cooney of the Troy Police Department says "it appears the victim has survived the first round of the fight" and he has a strong chance for survival after he tumbled out of his family's second-story apartment and landed on his head Monday night.

Troy Police say around 9:00 p.m. they were called to 62 Ingalls Avenue after the child fell from the second story apartment window. Upon police arrival, the boy had already been transported by his parents to St. Mary's Hospital. Doctors there immediately had the child transported to Albany Medical Center.

The boy is said to have fallen on his head and suffered serious trauma to the head.

Captain Cooney would not say whether or not the child was in the room by himself when he fell. Cooney said it did not appear likely, at this time, that the parents would face any neglect charges.

Cooney says investigators found the screen from the window on the sidewalk near where the child landed.

Some parents who live on Ingalls Avenue say they would like the city to force landlords into installing window guards in all of their apartment windows.

As of now, an apartment is up-to-code per city standards if the windows have screens.

Mike Fraser, the spokesperson for the mayor's office, tells NEWS10 the city has not looked at changing the city code.
