ORLANDO, Fla. - The family of an 11-year-old girl is suing Orange Lakes Resort in Orlando where she was electrocuted by playing mini golf.
The wrongful death lawsuit filed Tuesday in Orlando seeks more than $27 million in damages. Ashton Jojo of Latham, N.Y., was electrocuted June 27 at a mini golf course while retrieving a ball from a pond.
The lawsuit also seeks damages for the mental and emotional distress suffered by parents David and Deborah Jojo and their 14-year-old son Donovan, the loss of Ashton's companionship, medical expenses and funeral costs.
The suit states that upon being electrocuted by the highly energized pond water, Ashton was unable to move and collapsed, thus suffering continuous electrocution.
The family's Miami-based attorney Ira Leesfield says the resort didn't hire a certified electrical contractor or obtain proper permits to replace aging equipment.
They also claim employees of the resort failed to come to Ashton's rescue. A good samaritan passing by attempted to rescue the girl, which in turn led to him being shocked until the employees finally tuned off the power of the water feature.
Orange Lake Resort released the following statement to the media: "Per company policy, we do not
comment on pending legal matters. Our hearts go out to the Jojo family during
this difficult time."
