Private island for sale in Scotia

SCOTIA, N.Y. - If you're looking to buy a private island no need to go to the Caribbean, there's one for sale in Scotia, New York.

"I have not heard of anyone selling an island especially in the Capital District," said realtor Denise Polsineelli, who says she has sold plenty of houses, but this is the first private island she has had on the market.

The island is named Glenotia Park, a combination of Glenville and Scotia. It's located on the Mohawk River, behind the Glen Sanders Mansion.

"I was a little scared about the island because I wasn't sure what the market would be," said Polsineelli. The asking price is just under $92,000.

Lynn Pennacchia owns the 19-acre property. She said now it's mostly overgrown vegitation, but it has a great history, dating back to the early 1900s.

"It originally started by someone starting a swimming school and that kind of evolved into recreation for adults, recreation for children, the whole family thing. They also added dancing on Saturday nights," said Pennacchia.

"That rich history caused my husband to purchase the island with hopes that someday he could return it to that type of a spot for families," said Pennacchia.

Unfortunately for Lynn that dream never materialized, and the island remains vacant and overgrown.

"Not that we want to give up on the property, but we thought we could put it out there for someone who shared our interests," said Pennacchia. "The kayaking, the canoeing, some of those slow activities."

However, there are some restrictions that come with the purchase.

"There can't be any permanent structures because of conservation issues and rules that have to be followed," said Pennacchia.

The other major issue, the only bridge to the island was knocked out by weather decades ago. It's a slight obstacle when it comes to showing off the property.

"I do have access to a kayak, so if they don't mind putting a life jacket on and getting in a kayak I can get them over there," said Polsineelli.
