Columbia County residents discuss emergency alert plans

Posted:

HUDSON, N.Y. - Fallout continues from the massive recycling plant fire in Columbia County, where nearby residents say they were not alerted quickly enough about the fire and potential chemicals that could be in the air.

TCI Inc. of New York, located in Ghent, exploded going up in flames the night of August 2nd. A 15-mile warning radius was almost immediately posted, and people within it were warned to stay in side, close windows, and try not to expose themselves to the possibly contaminated air.

One problem is that some people living closest to the Columbia County plant say they were never alerted partially because the county has no system which would prompt calls to homes with a recorded warning message.

County officials admitted last week they didn't do enough to alert residents.

Tuesday night, a public safety meeting will be held in the City of Hudson to discuss how to handle future emergencies, including the possibility of an alert system. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at 401 State Street.
