NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - A 20-year-old soldier with the U.S. Army was killed in Afghanistan Thursday, the Superintendent's Office in North Adams tells NEWS10.

Mike DeMarsico, of North Adams, served in Afghanistan with the 11 Bravo Infantry of the U.S. Army, according to his Facebook page where an outpouring of love and support was left Friday.

The Mayor of North Adams Richard Alcombright tells NEWS10 DeMarsico was killed after coming into contact with some sort of improvised explosive device.

Mike attended Drury High School in North Adams and is currently listed as residing in Washington.

Mayor Alcombright says his body should be returned to the U.S. in the next couple days.

DeMarsico is the first North Adams soldier to die while serving since Vietnam.

He was only four months away from wrapping up his first tour of duty when he was killed.
