Investigators survey plane crash scene

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. - Federal aviation safety experts are set to talk about the small plane crash that killed a 67-year-old Albany man and left another in critical condition, fighting for his life Thursday afternoon.

State police say the National Transportation Safety Board is at the scene of the tragic plane crash on Van Vranken Road in Clifton Park Thursday, with investigators trying to determine what cause the small single-engine plane to go down around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The National Transportation Safety Board will take the lead on the update about the attempted emergency landing of the Beechcraft Bonanza. Dennis Diaz is the air safety investigator that arrived on-scene Thursday morning to collect evidence and survey the wreckage.

"We're going to document the scene as it is. We're going to document any residual fuel that's in the plane and we'll talk to first responders and get their observations," Diaz said.

They say it will take five to ten days to release a preliminary report, but the exact probable cause might not be released for another year.

Initial reports Wednesday said the plane went down because of engine failure, though the NTSB will neither confirm nor deny that, saying it is a possibility they are looking into.

The plane's pilot, 68-year-old James Quinn of Westerlo, remains in critical condition at Albany Medical Center Thursday.

Quinn had just taken off from Albany International Airport, destined to Plattsburgh, when he reported an engine problem less than five minutes into the flight and tried to land. The single-engine six-seater skidded across lawns and into trees, killing 67-year-old passenger Walter Uccellini of Albany.

Uccellini was the founder and top executive of a Troy-based real estate development company. Quinn is the company's vice chairman.

Diaz said he hoped to have the wreckage cleared from the scene by Thursday evening.
