ALBANY, N.Y. - Governor Andrew Cuomo held a summit at the Egg Center for Performing Arts Wednesday to discuss ways for New York State to capitalize on the growing Greek yogurt boom.
The Governor hopes the popularity of Greek yogurt spurs demand for milk, helping state dairy farmers get out from under growing financial hardships.
Cuomo met with dairy farmers and top Greek yogurt makers "Chobani" and "Fage" to come up with ways to increase the state's share of the growing yogurt trade.
"The numbers on yogurt production are staggering. Half-a-billion pounds produced (per day) is unbelievable," said Governor Cuomo.
Yogurt, especially "Greek style," has become big business in New York in recent years, with about 70% of all the Greek yogurt in the country being produced in the Empire State.
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver agrees, saying New York State can become the top yogurt producer in the nation, if not the world.
