Police: Man in custody after standoff at Schenectady home

Posted: Updated:

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Police in Schenectady say the mentally unstable man that was suspect of threatening to shoot police is now in custody.

Police say a stand off with the suspect began around 10 a.m. Monday morning inside 1875 Foster Avenue in Schenectady.

Around noon, the unnamed suspect was taken into custody after police used tear gas to remove the man from the apartment building. Police called in medics to remove the man from the home. He is now undergoing mental evaluation at Ellis Hospital.

Schenectady Police Lt. Mark McCrackin says the stand off began after a dispute between two neighbors in the home. There is no word on what the argument was over.

McCrackin also says at some point the man inside the apartment also threatened to shoot police.

The block on Foster Avenue between Manhattan Street and Claredon Street has been closed off to traffic while Schenectady Police work to clear the scene.
