RICHMONDVILLE, NY – One person is dead and two people are in the hospital after a tractor trailer crashed in Richmondville on Sunday.
At approximately 12:04 p.m., a tractor trailer was travelling westbound on I-88 when it swerved to the left and hit the guardrail.
The tractor trailer rode the guardrail for at least 120 feet before it flipped upside down and landed in between the eastbound and westbound bridges over State Route 7.
Two women, a mother and daughter, were travelling in a car westbound on State Route 7 and skidded up to the wreckage of the tractor trailer just as it exploded in flames.
The women told police, "The truck fell out of the sky!"
The women were able to flee the car, but they both still suffered from burn injuries. They were transported to the Westchester Medical Center in Westchester County for burns. However they are currently not at the burn center and they are just at the hospital being treated. Their conditions are unknown at this time.
The tractor trailer driver, whose identity is not being released pending family notification, was found decreased in the wreckage.
The tractor trailer released diesel fuel all over the road but it did not burn. The tractor trailer was not was not carrying hazardous materials.
The Department of Environment Conservation spill response team is currently cleaning up the fuel at the scene.
State Route 7 is still closed as of 7:45 p.m.
The Richmondville, Summit, Cobleskill, and Central Bridge Fire Departments all responded to the scene. Richmondville Volunteer Emergecny Squad, Schoharie County EMA, Summit, Cobleskill ambulances all assisted at the scene.
