SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Every year the racing season in Saratoga Springs means more money will be coming into the city boosting the local economy.
One of the ways this happens is by providing summer jobs; but how much money can people make in one summer?
One popular summer job during track season is parking. There is a variety of lots right outside the gates, some lots able to hold 450-500 cars, the price to park ranging from $5 up to $15 on most track days.
Every year, many families who live in homes near the track turn their yard into a
parking lot to make extra money. 18-year-old Margaret Morrissey says
this has been her summer job for several years now. "My family owns this lot and my sister and I work here every summer parking
cars," she tells NEWS10.
Down the road from Margaret there is a lot on Nelson Avenue close to the front entrance selling spots for $10.
One parking attendant, Sasha, tells NEWS10 he enjoys the summer job and is able to save up for the rest of the year, but he doesn't know how much the owners actually make, just that it's a lot.
So let's do a hypothetical for an imaginary lot:
Say a lot holds 500 cars and charges $10 per car, which would be a $5,000 profit for one day, $30,000 a week, and a grand total of $210,000 for the entire seven-week-long racing season!
