Delpopolo at Albany International Airport, before departing to London for the Olympics.
LONDON -- U.S. Olympic judoka Nick Delpopolo was kicked out of the games Monday after failing a drug test.
Olympic officials say Delpopolo tested positive for marijuana.
The 23-year old, who currently lives in Amsterdam and was a graduate of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Central High School, says he did not smoke marijuana and unknowingly ate a baked item that contained the plant.
Delpopolo placed seventh in his judo match last week but, with the positive test result, his standing was disqualified.
In a statement, Delpopolo apologized to his team and fans, saying he was embarrassed and calling the infraction a "mistake".
NEWS10 spoke with Delpopolo and Clifton Park's Kyle Vashkulat right before they left the Capital Region to represent the U.S. in judo. We also caught up with the pair while they trained at the Jason Morris Judo Center in Glenville.
