TROY, NY – An assault in Troy that left one man "clinging to life" is now being treated as a homicide.
Early Monday morning, 40-year-old Santos Bermudez, of Fourth Street, died after police believe he was beat with a blunt object to the head.
The assault happened around 1:00 a.m. Saturday at the bridge area over the Poestenkill Creek on Fourth Street between Canal Street and Ida Street. The scenario leading to the incident appears to be along the lines of an argument which escalated to a physical confrontation.
Early Saturday morning, police were notified of Bermudez at the Albany Medical Center emergency room and were told that the his condition would most likely be fatal.
Bermudez was kept on life support to allow harvest of his organs. He was pronounced dead early Monday morning.
Authorities are interviewing witnesses and reviewing a surveillance video from a nearby convenience store.
Police say all people involved, including Bermudez, are undocumented immigrants from Mexico.
