COLONIE, N.Y. - The long-awaited Trader Joe's grocery store opened its doors to the Capital Region Friday morning at 8 a.m.
Crowds gathered in the parking lots and employees ran around getting the new customers excited by handing out Hawaiian leis.
The 13,000 square foot Wolf Road store is celebrating its grand opening Friday. Employees tell NEWS10 they arrived at 3:30 a.m. to get the final preparations in order.
Trader Joe's specializes in unique grocery items, organic alternatives, and foods without artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.
"Eighty percent of our inventory is private label, so aside from being able to provide many fresh food items, we can keep prices low," says Trader Joe Captain Shawn Minihane. The grocery store chain calls their managers "captains".
"We pretty much provide everything a normal grocery store would, with several unique items to choose from."
The Colonie store is the only Trader Joe's in upstate New York. It will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. seven days a week.
