Tax credit for businesses that hire veterans set to expire

Posted:

MENANDS, N.Y.---Time is ticking on a tax credit designed to get veterans back to work, by offering companies an incentive to hire, ranging from $2,400 to $9,600.

The "Returning Heroes and Wounded Warriors Tax Credit" is set to expire at the end of this year, while unemployment numbers for veterans continue to rise.

Focused Technologies is a small business which has been steadily growing since 2003.

CEO Chuck Tobin says ten percent of the workforce is made up of veterans, and he is continuing to hire.

Tobin says while the tax credit certainly makes it easier from a business standpoint to hire, hiring vets is something he is glad to do.

Monday, Senator Schumer toured the company, meeting and talking with veterans who are employees.

Schumer calls Focused Technologies a success story, in terms of a business which is able to hire more people and provide jobs for vets, with the help of the tax credit.

Schumer says if the the tax credit expires, which was enacted in November of 2011, it would be a devastating blow to businesses and vets, especially in the Capital Region, where 2,600 of them are unemployed.

Schumer says he will fight to include this tax credit in the senate's tax extenders package, which will be considered in September.
