ALBANY, NY – Several roads and the Albany Medical Center parking garage were
closed on Monday after a nearby pedestrian bridge was hit by a truck.
Around noontime, a county sanitation truck clipped the bottom of the
pedestrian bridge that connects Albany Medical Center with the Hilton Garden
Inn Hotel. A noticeable amount of the bridge was missing after it was hit.
The bridge is used daily by patients and staff at the medical center. According
to the fire department, people were walking on the pedestrian bridge when it
was stuck, but there are no injuries reported.
The driver of the truck was not allowed to speak with the media. However we
do know that the driver was dropping off a dumpster and for some reason never
lowered the back of the truck, striking the walkway.
The truck eventually was backed out. Engineers were called in to check the
structural integrity of the bridge, while firefighters removed any loose debris
in danger of falling into the road.
Police continue to investigate the case. It is too early to tell whether or
not the truck driver will face any charges.
