Velazquez makes return to racing at Saratoga

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Top jockey John Velazqez made his return to the Saratoga Race Course Wednesday afternoon mounted on Lucky Friend in the fifth race.

Velazquez has been cleared to return to racing after a spill last month at Churchill Downs, breaking his right collarbone.

Velazquez says he's still not completely healed, but he's ready to go.

"I'm just happy to be here, happy to be competitive, and happy to ride my horses," Velazquez tells NEWS10. "Hopefully I get some good horses out of here or have something nice to ride at the Breeders Cup in the fall."

He only competed in two races Wednesday as he continues to work up his strength.

When asked if he was worried about getting back in the sport, Velazquez says, "No, it wasn't the first time it happened to me, and it won't be the last time it happens to me. I just hope it doesn't happen that often. It's going to happen, it's part of our jobs."

"That's the way I look at life, things happen to me for a reason and I'm well enough to come back and ride races. I can't be scared."
