WATERVLIET, N.Y. -- One woman was injured in a house fire in Watervliet but still managed to alert her family; helping ensure they got out safely.
Fire investigators say the blaze started inside 503 13th Street around 8:30 a.m. Thursday in a back bedroom on the first floor.
After an investigation, Watervliet Fire Chief Scott Skinner says the fire was caused by an electrical appliance in the bedroom, perhaps an air conditioner or dehumidifier.
Thick smoke billowed from the top of the house as dozens of firefighters from at least three neighborhoring departments helped battle the flames.
Miriam Miles told NEWS10 she owns the home and that her 22-year-old daughter was the one who suffered burns.
"My daughter and her fiance were sleeping and I was in the other room having coffee and they came running out. They said the house was on fire she heard a crackling noise. Her hair and foot got burned," Miles said.
Chief Skinner said the structure of the two story house made battling the fire challenging.
