REXFORD, N.Y. - A federal judge has dismissed charges against a Saratoga County woman accused of breaking immigration law by keeping an illegal alien as a servant, noting prosecutors missed a deadline for bringing the case to trial.
According to the criminal complaint, Annie George of Rexford induced the Indian woman, identified only as V.M., to overstay her visa and underpaid her for cooking, cleaning and care for six children.
After a hotline complaint of forced labor, immigration agents removed her from George's mansion in 2011.
U.S. District Judge Gary Sharpe says prosecutors can bring a new indictment.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Rick Belliss declined to comment Tuesday.
Defense attorney Mark Sacco, who requested dismissal, says he hopes prosecutors have better things to do and pay issues can be settled in civil court.
