SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - A proposal is on the books in the City of Schenectady to ban people from
sifting through trash for valuable electronic components.
City council members
say they are not opposed to people making a living off of recycling heavy metals
found in discarded electronics; the problem is from the debris left behind.
"People are supposed to ask the homeowner if it's okay to go through their
trash," says Schenectady Councilwoman Marion Porterfield. "Ideally, that's what they are supposed to do instead of just leaving a
mess behind."
The legislation, if passed, would curtail the growing problem of people
smashing out the valuable parts of discarded electronics, like computer monitors
and televisions, and leaving the non-recyclable parts behind.
The city wants to
make it so that it will be a citable offense to leave debris behind when
rummaging through trash for valuable electronic parts.
Schenectady City Council is set to have a meeting on the matter at the end
of July.
