SCHOHARIE, N.Y. - It has been almost one year since Tropical Storm Irene devastated parts of Schoharie County causing millions of dollars in damages. Wednesday, state officials announced $5.3 million will go
towards mitigation projects to repair the watershed.
Heather Prokop's family farm lost six cows and more than $500,000 was done in damages done from Tropical Storms Irene and Lee last year.
Prokop explains things have gotten better, but Mill Valley Road that the Prokop Family Farm is on, still needs work. The road also serves as an evacuation route for the
town.
Stabilizing the soil and repairing the watershed
along the two-mile road is one of 12 projects the state will help fund.
On Wednesday, Senator James Seward announced $5.3 million in funds will
go to mitigation projects in Schoharie County, a part of $16 million that will go to the entire
state. $878,000 in funds will be given to Greene County for mitigation projects.
The projects are expected to begin before the end of the year, and further construction efforts are expected to begin June 2013.
