ALBANY, NY - State police say one woman has died after crashing the vehicle she was driving into the guardrail on the Thruway Sunday night.

Authorities say 26-year-old Alisha Makepeace, from Portland, Maine, fell asleep behind the wheel around 9:00 p.m. on the eastbound side of the Thruway near Exit 24 in Albany County. Witnesses say the vehicle drifted into the median and hit a guardrail. Police believe Makepeace died on impact.

A male passenger, 26-year-old David Melnick, of New Hamshire, was transported to Albany Medical Center with a broken leg.

State police say the two were coming from the Camp Bisco Music Festival in Mariaville.

Police are awaiting toxicology results to determine if drugs or alcohol may have contributed to the accident.

The accident is still under investigation.
