TROY, N.Y. -- Troy police say the daughter of the victim found dead in his Seventh Avenue home early Friday morning has been arrested for murder.
Troy police say 17-year-old Trinity Copeland has been charged with second-degree murder, a felony, for the death of her father, 47-year-old Harlan Copeland, of Troy. He was found dead inside his residence on the first floor of 3022 Seventh Avenue around 4 a.m. Friday.
Police tell NEWS10 they spent the morning speaking with the man's daughter to get more information on what happened.
Trinity told police in a statement that her father had been angry at her for taking his ATM card and was threatening to kill her, then kill himself. She said he had been drinking when the confrontation started, around 3 a.m.
"He said that he was going to kill us both or I was going to have to kill him," Trinity said in her statement.
She went on to say, "He told me that he was gonna kill me. He was holding the gun and pointing it at me. My heart was pounding."
"He said that either way, he was going to die and he was giving me a way out... He said do it. I told him that I loved him and that I was sorry. Then I did it, I shot him."
Trinity then told police she aimed the gun and her father, and he told her what to say to cover up the crime. "I went to the kitchen and opened the right window. There are no fingerprints because I had gloves on," she told police.
The investigation began when Trinity Copeland told police she found her father's body. At that time, police believed she may have actually witnessed the shooting, but were unsure if she was involved.
Authorities say Copeland was found with one gunshot wound to the head. A firearm, believed to be the weapon involved, was recovered at scene.
The upstairs neighbor, who did not want to be identified, told NEWS10 Trinity ran up and knocked on her door looking for someone to "help her dad."
At first authorities were unclear if the death was a homicide or if the fatal wounds were self-inflicted.
Detectives are procuring a search warrant for Friday, and autopsy results are expected Saturday.
Trinity Copeland was arraigned Friday morning and sent to the Rensselaer County Jail without bail. She is due back in court July 17.
