SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Saratoga Springs Police Department says 13 arrests were made and more than 50 traffic citations issued this past weekend for the three-day Phish concert.
Police say the majority of the arrests were related to drug possession and sale. The drugs
seized included cocaine, heroin, LSD, Ecstasy, mushrooms, hash, marijuana,
nitrous oxide and the most recent drug to hit the area, bath salts. Also seized
were two rifles and over one thousand dollars in cash.
In
anticipation of the large crowds in the city this past weekend for the 3-day Phish
concert, the Saratoga Springs Police Department significantly increased its
staffing to manage the various public safety and law enforcement issues that
typically arise at events such as this.
Police Chief Christopher J. Cole said, "The department takes seriously its
commitment to be as proactive as possible to help provide a safe environment for
both concertgoers and the general public." They say the public can expect
that initiatives such as this will continue to be part of the department's philosophy to make concerts safe for
all.
Police say the funding for this initiative came from
monetary assets previously seized from convicted drug offenders and not the
city's general budget.
