MAYFIELD, N.Y. - A man was taken into custody by deputies in Fulton County after he set his house and garage on fire before slicing his throat on Sunday night.
Several 911 calls were made to the Fulton County Sheriff's Office for a fire at 912 County Highway 123 in Mayfield around 7:20 p.m.
Upon arrival, deputies say they found 51-year-old James Russell in the driveway of the home holding a knife. Police say Russell sliced his throat when police tried to take him into custody.
Prior to the arrival of deputies and police, Russell set his garage and house on fire. Authorities say the two buildings are completely destroyed.
A neighbor says she saw the flames and heard Russell outside yelling about how his children do not care about him and threatening to kill himself. The neighbor then had her mother call 911 right away.
A Fulton County Sheriff says Russell may have been depressed over his son recently going to jail.
Russell was flown by med flight to Albany Medical Center for treatment of self-inflicted injuries. There is no word of when he will be released from the hospital. However when he is released, he will face two charges of felony arson.
Fulton County Sheriffs say a motive behind the incident is still under investigation.
