BENNINGTON, Vt. - Police in Bennington say a man admitted to shooting a dog three times because the dog was "mean" and the man wasn't "able to train him."

Police were sent to the Birches Mobile Home Park for anonymous report of shots fired and a dog had been shot around 3:20 a.m. Friday.

Officers arrived and found a dead pit bull type dog that was still chained to his doghouse had been shot and killed.

Officers attempted to make contact with the owner of the trailer unsuccessfully and obtained a search warrant for the home in order to make contact with the resident, 47-year-old Edward Trombley.

The search revealed a .22 caliber rifle and ammunition as well as a three-foot-tall marijuana plant. Trombley was interviewed and he admitted to shooting the dog three times because the dog is mean and he hasn't been able to train him, and the dog nipped at him earlier.

Trombley is being charged with Aggravated Cruelty to an animal, a felony, Reckless Endangerment, and possession of a growing marijuana plant. He was arrested and held on $5,000 cash bail. Police say Trombley has a lengthy criminal history and is a convicted felon, thereby not being allowed to purchase, possess or own a firearm.

The dog was taken by Bennington Animal Control to the West Mountain Animal Hospital to confirm the method of death.
