GLOVERSVILLE, N.Y. - Police in Gloversville were called to a Price Chopper late Wednesday night after a man allegedly demanded money from the cashier displaying a large hunting knife.
Police say 50-year-old Jed Richards, who is currently homeless, went to the Price Chopper on North Main Street demanding money around 11:45 p.m. He fled
the store in a red SUV before taking any money or injuring anyone.
It was found that the cashier recognized Richards and was able to provide his name to officers.
While searching for the suspect, officers were called to a hit-and-run accident involving the same red SUV at a Cumberland Farms located down the street from the Price Chopper.
Richards was found a short time later at
North and Temple Street and was found to have been consuming alcohol. The
weapon used during the robbery was also recovered from the vehicle.
He was taken into custody and charged with DWI, a misdemeanor, as well as numerous traffic violations. Officers collected further evidence as part of the robbery investigation, at
the conclusion of which Richards was charged with Attempted Robbery 1st-degree, a felony.
At this time Richards remains in custody at
Gloversville Police Department.
