SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - A massive fire at an old restaurant in Schenectady is being called "suspicious" Thursday morning.
The call came in for a fire near the intersection of Barrett Street and South Avenue around 4:15 a.m. Thursday.
Fire Chief Michael DellaRocco says the fire started in the old Luigi's Restaurant and he has some concerns about how it may have started, deeming the fire "suspicious."
A demolition team plans to tear down what is left of the old restaurant Thursday after the fire gutted the building. The fire also spread to a neighboring building.
Luigi's is vacant and has been closed for several years now. The chief mentioned that the Italian restaurant has a history.
In April of 2006 the owner Marlene Hill, 75, was killed in her home by her grandson. DellaRocco says investigators are looking into what may have caused the fire. He says it looks like someone may have been coming in and out of the building and the copper may have been stolen from it.
No injuries have been reported at this time.
