HUDSON, N.Y. -- For the third time this week the Cedar Park Cemetery in Hudson has been damaged. The American flags on the Civil War graves have been ripped or gone missing.
NEWS10 was there Wednesday evening when volunteers discovered additional damage in another section close to the one that has already been targeted.
Local veterans groups placed American flags at more than 2,500 veterans headstones in the cemetery on Memorial Day.
"It's the way we show our appreciation to the dead. But to have someone come and do this is just a disgrace," said Randy Stats, a volunteer.
The first incident happened over the weekend, Stats said. More than 30 flags decorating the graves of Civil War Veterans in a smaller section of the larger cemetery were damaged. Then Tuesday evening, between 6 and 7 o'clock another 17 went missing.
"I can't understand the motivation of these people. If they know about this they're certainly fearless or just don't care," said Vince Wallace, a volunteer caretaker who found the damage.
Police are investigating and said an animal could be behind it.
Stats denies that, saying there were no bite marks on the flag poles.
Police are offering a $500 reward for information leading to an arrest.
