SCHULYERVILLE, NY -- Authorities have charged 28-year-old Joey Paul with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting that left her boyfriend, 28-year-old Matthew Furlani, dead Sunday.
State police say the fatal incident happened 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning inside the apartment the couple shared at 82 Church Street in the Village of Schulyerville.
Saratoga County District Attorney James Murphy says police were called to the scene by neighbors who heard a gunshot coming from the apartment. Upon arrival, Furlani was found dead from a gunshot wound.
Murphy says a large caliber rifle was secured at the scene. Furlani was unarmed and Paul was uninjured. Murphy says there is no allegation of self defense in the incident.
Paul also has a pending charge out of Mechanicville from an alleged burglary at her brother's home.
Neighbors who would not speak on camera say the apartment building has had several problems in the past.
Others who live closeby explained that they were shocked by the violence happening in this small, tight knit community.
"It happened five blocks away from where my house. I have a ten-month-old at home and I don't know what's going to happen next," Maxwell Baranowski, a neighbor said.
A search warrant was executed at the home and the investigation by state police into Furlani's death is continuing.
Paul was arraigned and remains in the Saratoga County Jail without bail.
