AMSTERDAM, NY – A drunk driver nearly struck a police officer
in Amsterdam on Friday.
Officers were directing traffic on State Highway 30
northbound and State Highway 5W in an attempt to ease heavy traffic. Around
4:50 p.m., an officer noticed a pick-up truck going the wrong way down a one
way on State Highway 5W.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle by using verbal
commands and hand signals. However the pick-up truck continued to drive,
causing an officer to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.
A car chase began which ended on Elizabeth Street when the vehicle
stopped.
The driver of the vehicle has been identified as 43-year-old
William White, of Glenville. Officers say White was highly intoxicated and
arrested. A search of his vehicle revealed cans, bottles, and containers of
liquor.
White was arraigned and released from jail on bond. He is
scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
