AMSTERDAM, NY – A drunk driver nearly struck a police officer in Amsterdam on Friday.

Officers were directing traffic on State Highway 30 northbound and State Highway 5W in an attempt to ease heavy traffic. Around 4:50 p.m., an officer noticed a pick-up truck going the wrong way down a one way on State Highway 5W.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle by using verbal commands and hand signals. However the pick-up truck continued to drive, causing an officer to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.

A car chase began which ended on Elizabeth Street when the vehicle stopped.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified as 43-year-old William White, of Glenville. Officers say White was highly intoxicated and arrested. A search of his vehicle revealed cans, bottles, and containers of liquor.

White was arraigned and released from jail on bond. He is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
