Affordable Care Act passage creates strong opinions, many questions

ALBANY -- Two rallies at the Capitol focused on the Supreme Court's decision Thursday on the Affordable Care Act.

The first event, at noon, was organized by Single Payer New York. They organized the rally, joining with Occupy Albany, the Capital District Alliance for Universal Health Care, and Physicians for National Health Program. They are opposed to the Affordable Care Act because they said it doesn't go far enough.

The second rally was held by the Capital District supporters of the Affordable Care Act. They billed the event as a "victory party" for Americans.

Despite these strong opinions, how the Affordable Care Act will be implemented in New York is still unclear.

The Associate Dean and Professor of Law at Albany Law School, Alicia Ouellette said, "Health reform will mean more access to care and there's not the worry of losing coverage when you lose your job."

But what about health care providers who will now have to implement these new rules? NEWS10 sat down with Brian O'Grady, the Vice President of BlueShield of Northeastern New York to find out what this will mean for premiums.

"We want those who don't currently have insurance to obviously join the pool and become engaged in managing their healthcare, which will hopefully lead to healthier, more productive lives," O'Grady said.

O'Grady said he didn't expect the implementation of the Affordable Care Act to lead to higher premiums but there are still many unknowns.
