ALBANY, N.Y. - Sunday was the one year since New York lawmakers passed same sex marriage. Millions marked the year anniversary at gay pride parades, not only in NYC but in cities across the country.
Once the Senate passed the bill and the Governor signed it, it took 30 days to go into effect.
Harold Lohner and Al Martino were the first couple in the Capital Region to have a public wedding at City Hall in Albany. Lohner and Martino have been together 15 years but said it was important for them to have it official.
In New York City, nearly two million people lined 5th Avenue for the annual gay pride parade. Governor Cuomo who helped lead the charge to pass same sex marriage was front and center.
In Albany, the festivities were on a slightly smaller scale. The AIDS Council of Northeastern New York partnering with the Pride Center of the Capital Region and Creo' Restaurant for a Sunday brunch fundraiser.
Supporters now hoping same sex marriage will pass it other states.
Libby Post, an LGBT activist, told NEWS10 for that to happen the three Republican State Senators who voted to pass it, Roy McDonald, Stephen Saland and Mark Grisanti win their upcoming primaries.
