Schenectady starts gun buyback program after fatal shooting

Posted:

SCHENECTADY -- A year after a 15-year-old Schenectady teen was gunned down, the community has joined with law enforcement to put a stop to the violence by starting a gun buyback program.

The first event was held Saturday at the Hamilton Hill Arts Center from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. Authorities said the four hour long event resulted in 28 guns being turned in. Sheriffs collected 16 handguns and 12 rifles and shotguns. In return for the weapons, officials gave gift cards of different prices for various guns.

The Schenectady County Sheriff Dominic Dagostino said that the community came to law enforcement following the death of Eddie Stanley. The high school sophomore was a rising star on the Schenectady High School team.

The gun buyback will now be a monthly event in Schenectady, held in different locations across the county.
