Thieves steal donations for WWII Veteran fundraiser

Posted:

DELMAR, NY – Organizers of an upcoming fundraiser for World War II Veterans say thieves stole more than a thousand dollars in donations.

Chairman of the Blanchard Post of the American Legion in Delmar John Rees says his car was broken into on Thursday night. A thief stole more than a thousand dollars in merchandise and gift certificates. The items were supposed to be raffled off at a golf tournament fundraiser on Monday.

The fundraiser is an annual event that raises more than $3,000 for Patriot Flight. Patriot Flight is an organization that brings WWII Veterans to the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C.

John Rees says, "They're dying off radically and these guys, they're amazed that we'll buy them a plane ticket and get them to the memorial site and it's spectacular. They are so grateful."

Rees has called police who say the theft is likely connected to a string of car break-ins in the area.

The Legion will still hold the annual golf tournament but they admit they most likely will not raise as much money.

Organizers are trying to make up for donations that were stolen. If you are interested in donating towards the fundraiser please e-mail your name, contact information, and donation offer to news@news10.com  or log-on our Facebook page and post your information there.
