ALBANY, NY – New York Senator Chuck Schumer wants new federal standards on reporting senior abuse.
This comes following a report that found more than 260,000 seniors were abused in one year in New York State. New York also has one of the lowest reporting rates, with only one in 24 cases documented.
Senator Schumer wants to have more training and education about elder abuse to help stop this. Schumer says, "We train our teachers to report abuse if a child shows up bruised, but with elderly people sometimes they are bruised and bloodied and we need to train the operators of senior centers to recognize the abuse so they can work against it."
Schumer says seniors are not just abused physically but also financially with scams online and on the phone.
