TROY, NY – The City of Troy organized a gun buyback program on Saturday.
The buyback was held at the Missing Link Street Ministry located on Sixth Avenue. It was the third buyback program held in Troy.
In recent months, Troy has experiences a spike in violent crimes that specifically involve guns. Earlier in June, police arrested a man in connection to a teen being shot in the leg. In May, police arrested two men after finding a 15-year-old male in possession of a loaded handgun.
As police continue to work combating gun crimes, the city stepped up by organizing a gun buyback program.
The program consisted of people turning in guns and receiving a $100 gift card in return with no questions asked. A total of 13 guns, including a sawed-off semi-automatic shotgun and nine handguns were collected at the event.
While the city admits that statistics show these programs will not prevent crime, they do help ensure a weapon will not find its way into the wrong hands.
The city hopes to continue gun buyback programs however they need donations to help.
Anyone interested in helping can give to the "Funds for Guns" account at any Pioneer Savings Bank.
