GILBOA, N.Y. - The community in Gilboa now coming together after an ATV accident took the lives of a 12-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy on Route 30.

Police said 12-year-old Brittany Paes and 16-year-old Jeffrey Jones were riding the ATV when it collided with a dump truck on Wednesday around noon.

Both Paes and Jones were students at the Gilboa-Conesville Central School district. Paes played modified basketball and Jones played varsity soccer.

Kassidy Cipolla, an eighth grade student, says the community is close and the school is small. Paes had just finished seventh grade and Jones just finished tenth grade.

Schoharie County Sheriff Tony Desmond said Jones was operating the ATV and he was wearing a helmet. Paes was not.

Sheriff Desmond said the truck driver was not injured and at this time there are no charges. Desmond said the entire tragedy has shaken the community young and old.

NY State Police Troop G accident reconstruction team was on scene Wednesday and will report its finding to the sheriff in the coming days.
