GILBOA, NY – A 12-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy died when their ATV collided with a dump truck in Gilboa on Wednesday.

The accident happened around 12:30 p.m. on State Route 30 at the corner of Route 990V. Brittany Paes, of Gilboa, and Jeffrey Jones, of North Blenheim, were riding the ATV in a field when they drove out into the road. Authorities say the dump truck was traveling south when the ATV came into its lane. By the time the driver tried to stop, the ATV was under it.

Paes and Jones suffered major head trauma and were transported to Margaretville Memorial Hospital where they died.

Paes and Jones are both students at Gilboa-Conesville Central School District and their last day of school was on Tuesday. Superintendent Ruth Reeve at Gilboa-Conesville Central School District says greif counselors will be available during school hours for students, staff, and community members on Thursday and Friday.

The driver of the dump truck was not injured and has not been charged. Authorities say the driver has been cooperating.
