MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont's state Agency of Transportation has won a top regional honor for its work to recover from Tropical Storm Irene.
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation officials gave Vermont the "Ahead-of-Schedule" award in the large project category in its Northeast regional award presentation.
The association says nearly 330 road segments and 36 highway bridges were closed while 11 local communities were left without access to the road network and emergency services after Irene.
The agency got Vermont's road network fully open again within 123 days of the Aug. 28 storm.
It also won praise for its public communications during the crisis.
