WOODFORD, Vt. (AP) - The tiny Vermont school district in Woodford has received a $108,000 windfall from the federal government as an impact payment for the national forest land in the community.
The district had budgeted to receive $88,000 from the federal government, but when the check arrived it was for more than $196,500.
The district's annual operating budget is about $467,000.
The Bennington Banner reports officials are going to recommend that voters put the extra money into a reserve fund.
Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union Chief Financial Officer Richard Pembroke says the federal government determines its payments through a formula that takes into account the number of applications, how much money is available, the community's grand list, poverty rate, and the amount of federal land in a district.
