Community, colleagues honor slain Mass. officer

Posted:

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Thousands of people are paying their respects to a Springfield police officer killed this week responding to a domestic violence case.

Fellow police officers, officials and citizens lined up for Thursday's wake for Officer Kevin Ambrose at a Springfield funeral home. It began at 2 p.m. and continued into the evening.

Gov. Deval Patrick is to attend Ambrose's funeral Friday morning at St. Catherine of Siena church. Out-of-town officers are to march from the church to a cemetery for Ambrose's burial site.

Ambrose was shot Monday when he answered a 911 call from a Springfield woman who said she feared for her life after a dispute with her ex-boyfriend, a New York City prison guard. Police said Shawn Bryan killed Ambrose, critically wounded Charlene Mitchell and killed himself.

Ambrose was a 36-year veteran of the Springfield department.
