TROY, N.Y. - Troy Police say a long-time officer with the department has been arrested in New York City Friday morning stemming from computer-related crimes deemed dangerous to minors.
NEWS10 has confirmed 53-year-old Sgt. Patrick Rosney, a 26-year veteran of the Troy Police Department, has been arrested, and is now on his way to New York City to answer to charges one of attempting to disseminate indecent material to a minor, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.
Troy police say the criminal charges are brought forth by the New York City Police Department in an undercover sting operation. New York City Police say the charges allege computer-related crimes involving a 14-year-old girl in an internet chatroom.
Rosney allegedly sent sexually explicit messages and webcam video of his genitals to what turned out to be an undercover NYPD vice officer he'd met online May 15.
A search warrant was obtained for Rosney's home where officials took computer equipment.
Police Chief John Tedisco says the department is understandabley in shock. "They are angry, they are repulsed, and feeling sympathy for his family. But we are a strong agency, we'll get through this," he said during a media briefing on Friday.
Rosney has been placed on administrative leave without pay and been relieved of his revolver and access to the Troy Police Department.
