Patrick to tour WMass to mark tornado anniversary

BOSTON (AP) - Gov. Deval Patrick is heading to western and central Massachusetts to tour a tornado recovery site and attend a ceremony commemorating the passage of 1 year since a devastating storm destroyed lives and livelihoods in the region.

The Democratic governor is scheduled to tour a recovery site in Monson, before heading to West Springfield to dedicate a garden in memory of those killed in rare Massachusetts tornadoes.

Last June, four tornadoes touched down, destroying or damaging 1,400 houses and 78 businesses in western and central Massachusetts. Three people died as a result of the storm.

Monson, with a population of 8,500, received 1 of the storm's biggest blows when a twister with160 mph wind gusts touched down in the heart of its downtown.
